Norway : Trondelag University College Phd Scholarships

Financial and Empirical Modelling of Energy Markets

Ref: TOH - stipendiat 03/2008

At Trondheim Business School (TBS) - Sør Trøndelag University College there is a Phd Scholarship available within financial and empirical modelling of energy markets. TBS was established in 1967, and is today one of the oldest public business schools in Norway. About 1000 full-time students and about 200 part time students attend our school today. We admit about 280 new students to our Bachelor programmes and 80 students to our Master programmes every year. We offer education at a high academic level, and we emphasize the combination of theoretic curriculum and practical problem solving through group-work and real life projects. We also aim to develop the student's personal capabilities and skills concerning future leadership tasks. Trondheim Business School is located at Moholt, close to three of the largest student hostels in town. Our lecture rooms, study halls, workrooms and library are all well equipped and the working conditions are good. Trondheim Business School also offers a full year taught in English at undergraduate level, for exchange students. The candidate will be a part our lecture and research team and is expected to contribute academically as well as socially.

The research project involves building decisions tools relevant for pricing and hedging in the electricity spot and derivative markets. Consequently, research will be centred on the following thematic research areas (for a detailed description of these research themes, contact the references below):

  • Prediction modelling of electricity and natural gas markets.
  • Modelling electricity spot and derivatives markets using both equilibrium and no-arbitrage analyses.
  • Analysis of area price risks in the electricity market
  • Real options analysis of production and investment decisions

The data used are market data for spot- and derivative prices, from the Nordic, German and UK electricity and gas markets plus various determinant variables (weather/hydro variables, consumption, alternative energy prices etc). The participants of the project in addition to TBS are two local energy companies, a local foundation for economic research, and researches from academic institutions in London and New York. Part of the Phd project can be performed at these institutions for a restricted period during the Phd.
