Australia: KHA Biomedical Research Scholarships

Kidney Health Australia provides scholarships for individuals wishing to study full time for the research degrees of PhD or MD and Masters by research, by undertaking research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidney.

Nature of Funding. The amount of the scholarship stipend will range from $28,000 (Science) to $33,000 (Medical), depending on the qualifications the applicant holds and duration of study, for a period of up to 2 years for a Masters by Research, and up to 3 years for a PhD degree.

The funding is awarded annually for the duration of the Award (2 years or 3 years depending on study) but funding in 2nd and 3rd year is contingent on Kidney Health Australia receiving evidence that an applicant has also applied to other granting bodies (e.g. NHMRC) for support of those years.

Applicants should have graduated, or be proposing to graduate in the current academic year.

The scholarships do not include university fees if these are payable. While scholarships of this nature are usually tax exempt, the final determination of their tax status rests with the Australian Tax Office.

Eligibility and Location. Preference will be given to Australian applicants enrolled in Australian universities. Part-time students are not eligible. Recipients may undertake additional paid work to supplement their scholarship stipend provided that their full-time student status is not compromised.

Covering Letter. The application should be accompanied by a covering letter signed by the student’s Supervisor indicating that he or she has been accepted into a PhD or MD program, outlining the project title, and any specific factors that may favour the award of a scholarship to the applicant.

Closing date. Four printed copies each of your application and accompanying letter, should reach the Medical Director’s office by 30 August each year.

Application. There is no application formal form. The scholarship application should be set out on plain A4 paper in 12 point font, with 2cm margins all round, and should not exceed four pages in length. ‘

NHMRC PhD application. If the PhD student has also applied to the NHMRC for PhD funding, a copy of this document will be accepted as a formal application, but note that a Supervisor’s letter of support is still required.
