Denmark: Ph.D Fellowships in Grid Converter for LED Based Light, Aalborg University

Three years PhD fellowships are available within Department of Energy Technology, Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine. The study will be in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering programme with the subject “Grid converter for LED based intelligent light sources”.

Interested candidates are expected to hold a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering and should have a sound background in electronics, switch mode converters and control theory applied to power converters. Good analytical skills and a sharp interest in practical investigation are also required.

Successful candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculty. The progress of the PhD student will be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

Project Description

As part of a large research effort of 4 Mill Euro to develop a powerful LED-based light source, and making it possible to optimize the total system efficiency from power grid to optical output (lumens per watt) taking into account both electrical and thermal aspects, this PhD stipend is offered.

To power the LED a voltage of 3-4V is used and this voltage is obtained from a grid voltage 85V to 270 V. The power consumed by the LED needs to be converted in 2 or 3 power stages, and each conversion step dissipates heat. A compact and light-weight system requires energy efficiency power converter stages. In this project the ac/dc and dc/dc stages must be optimized to minimize the material usage of EMI filter, magnetic components and cooling system. To maintain system performance an increased level of semiconductors and signal processing may be acceptable.

You will be a member of a research team including the leading industrial manufacturer Martin Professional A/S and a high level university research environment with state of the art laboratory equipment. A close cooperation between the researches, senior researchers and knowledge exchange with the industrial partner will be expected. As a PhD stipend holder you are expected also to participate in international conferences as author.

Key topics: State of the art of power factor correction, DC/DC converters, (LED converters), design of converters for efficiency and EMI, advanced control strategy of converters, minimization of material usage, implementation of digital control of converters, test and verification of system.
