School of Engineering and Physical Sciences
Stipend: ~ £8,000 - £13,000 per annum
Applications are invited for a full-time PhD studentship in the School of Engineering and Physical Science at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK (www.eps.hw.ac.uk). This studentship is fully funded for three years and the application is open to UK, EU and overseas candidates.
The project will explore the new possibilities enabled by BioMEMS and Nanotechnology and the interfaces with life sciences. Research projects include one of the following areas:
- a) Optical detection systems for microcantilever sensor arrays.
- b) Microfluidic cell assay for high-throughput drug screening.
- c) Nano-sensor devices and systems for rapid disease diagnosis.
- d) Micro-robotic systems for manipulation of single cells
The student will be supervised by Dr. Will Shu and Prof. Bob Reuben and working within a highly interdisciplinary research team involving extensive collaborations with Cambridge University, Leeds University and the China National Centre for Nanoscience and Technology. The student will become a member of the Micromechanics Research Group in Mechanical Engineering (http://www.mec.hw.ac.uk/research/micromechanics.htm), and will be part of the Institute of Integrated Systems (IIS) within the Edinburgh Research Partnership in Engineering with Edinburgh University.
Applications are welcome from candidates with a good degree in engineering, physics, chemistry, materials or a related field. Previous experimental research experience in electronics, optics or MEMS fabrication would be particular welcome. The start date will be 1st October 2008.
For informal enquiries contact Dr. Will Shu (w.shu@hw.ac.uk, http://www.mec.hw.ac.uk/people/w_shu.htm)
Applications should be made as soon as possible. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply by filling in an online application form: http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/apply/.
