BICC Studentships
The studentship will cover fees and maintenance (subject to eligibility) for 3 (or, exceptionally, 4) years of doctoral study at the University of Bristol.
The British Inter-University China Centre (BICC) is a joint venture between Oxford, Bristol, and Manchester Universities. It has been awarded a grant of £5m from the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Economic and Social Research Council and the Arts and Humanities Research Council with the aim of making it Britain's leading centre for research and teaching on China and Chinese language.
BICC's mission is threefold. It aims:
- to expand undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of Chinese language and Chinese area studies
- to facilitate the performance of original research in Chinese studies
- to initiate a broad range of dissemination and outreach activities particularly, but not exclusively, in the UK
Training and use of the Chinese language is an essential part of BICC's mission. Proposed research by BICC scholars should always contain substantial use of the Chinese language, either spoken, written, or classical. Holders of 3-year PhD awards are expected to have intermediary Chinese and will work to improve their Chinese language skills during the first years of study.
The studentship award is available on a +3 basis, for 3 years of doctoral study. Should there be an outstanding candidate without sufficient language experience, the possibility exists to incorporate an extra, funded, year of language training, based in China, into the programme. You should state on your application whether you would seek to undertake this.
In addition to applying for the studentship, applicants will need to apply separately to the University of Bristol for their chosen course. Applicants will be expected to have contacted a potential supervisor to discuss the suitability of their proposal.
For details of suitable areas of study, please look at the study area of the Centre for East Asian Studies website, and make preliminary enquiries to the staff listed there: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/ceas/studying/phd/default.shtml
