PhD Studentships and PhD Fee Bursaries

The School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures has one of the UK's largest and most diverse postgraduate communities in the UK, enjoying state-of-the-art facilities and excellent support within a high-quality research environment.. In step with our continuing expansion, we are enhancing our support for students registering for a research degree (PhD) in 2008-9. As part of this the School is pleased to announce it will be offering a number of PhD Studentships (fees and maintenance) and PhD Fee bursaries to new PhD applicants.
PhD Studentship (fees and maintenance)
The PhD Studentship competition is open to full-time and part-time students applying for a PhD programme within the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures at the University of Manchester.
The awards:
• For full-time PhD students the award will cover payment of the full-time Manchester Home/EU fees (£3300 in 2008-9) or partial assistance with international fees, plus a maintenance bursary.
• For part-time PhD students the award will cover payment of the part-time Manchester Home/EU fees (£1650 in 2008-9), plus a maintenance bursary.
Students who are eligible and suitably qualified must also apply for an externally funded studentship award i.e. AHRC or ESRC as appropriate and awards will be only be made if candidates are unsuccessful in external funding competitions. Please note, we are also in a position to consider studentship applications from candidates who have missed the deadline for the external funding competitions (AHRC/ESRC). PhD Fee Bursaries (assistance with fees)
We are also offering a number of full-time and part-time fee bursaries for UK/EU and International PhD students. These awards cannot be held alongside full external awards from bodies such as AHRC/ESRC or any other external agency. Please contact the relevant PhD Programme Director regarding your research topic and/or your suitability for externally funded competitions. See the School Website for details.
Further Information
The closing date for receipt of the Funding Application Form is Friday 27 June 2008. Please note applicants must be holding an offer of a place by the closing date in order to be included in the competition. Allocations will be decided by a School Committee to be held by mid July 2008.
