UK: Research Assistant Positions in Cancer Care, Coventry University

Twelve month fixed term Research Assistant - Peer Navigator in Cancer Care positions are available within the Applied Research Centre in Health and Lifestyle Interventions, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The main purpose of this positions is to conduct and organise peer navigator intervention relating to pilot decision support service for Breast and Prostate Cancer Patient.

The salary range would be £20,724 - £23,886 pro rata per annum. The main purpose of this jobs is to develop, conduct, project manage and disseminate research in the peer navigator project. You will have to report to Dr. Belinda Hacking (PI and clinical supervisor) and for research advice to Dr. Nahid Ahmad and Prof. Louise Wallace.

Brief Project Descriptions

A new approach to improving participation by newly diagnosed breast and prostate cancer patients in their clinical consultations is being evaluated in the Edinburgh Cancer Unit by Dr Belinda Hacking. The role of peer navigator is to provide the intervention. This includes consulting with specified cancer patients before to plan the consultation, assisting with questionnaire and recording the agreements made in the consultation, debriefing afterwards, and working with the researchers to obtain participants’ views. You will be appointed via Coventry university and based at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre, working with clinical and health psychology staff within the local team.

Quailified candidates are expected to have:

  • GCSE or equivalent including Mathematics and English
  • RSA Stage II Typing/Word processing or equivalent or substantial word-processing experience. And/or:
  • Degree or equivalent experience in a social science or biological science field, or registration with a Health Care Professions Board, or counselling qualification.

Masters or postgraduate research degree will be an advantage.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To co-ordinate effectively with clinical nurse specialists and breast care nurses, who are in a position to identify which patients would be eligible for the study.
  • To participate in training sessions for this role. To adhere strictly to research protocol.
  • To go through information about the study and the consent process with patients who are eligible for the study. To file all consent forms.
  • To organise the randomisation of participants to intervention and control groups, based upon information given by ARC HLI at Coventry University.
  • To meet with consented patients for each consultation planning session, to give the consultation plan to the patient and their doctor.
  • To take notes of meeting with patient and doctor, using handwriting/ audio recording/ typing in real time as required.
  • To remind patient as appropriate of questions on Consultation Plan that may not have been addressed by doctor during the meeting.
  • To complete consultation record and send to patient and GP, after doctor has verified record for accuracy. To file consultation record in patient’s medical notes.
  • To audio-record meetings with patients and their doctors and to send recordings to patients as requested.
  • To send/give patients questionnaires as set out in protocol. To follow protocol on management of research data and personal information.
  • To write process notes after each consultation planning and recording session, in order to monitor their adherence to and application of the protocol.
  • To attend steering group meetings.
  • To ensure that data is stored in accordance to criteria as set out in protocol and Data Protection Act, maintaining data quality assurance procedures and monitoring to ensure compliance.
  • To participate in delivering presentations both internally (to other colleagues to update them on the research project) and contribute to presentations and papers for funding body.
  • To liaise internally with colleagues and externally with networks such as SCAN that have a shared research interest, to share information and build relationships for future collaborations.
  • To engage in continuous professional development, through participating in training and development activities
