UK: University of Warwick Diabetes UK-funded PhD Studentship

Title: Disturbance of thiamine (vitamin B1) metabolism in diabetes and vascular complications

Clinical Sciences Research Institute, Warwick Medical School

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship funded by Diabetes UK in Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, Coventry, U.K. The title of the project is "Mechanism of increased renal clearance of thiamine in hyperglycaemia associated with diabetes" supervised by Professor Paul J Thornalley and Dr Naila Rabbani. The project builds on the recent finding by this team of a profound increase in renal clearance of thiamine (vitamin B1) in clinical type 1 and type 2 diabetes leading to low thiamine concentration in plasma and tissues where complications of diabetes arise (Diabetologia 50, 2164 - 2170, 2007). High dose thiamine supplements hold promise of therapy for prevention of vascular complications in diabetes. The host team of this project are participating in on-going clinical trials. The aim of this investigation is to characterise the mechanism of increased renal clearance of thiamine in diabetes that causes plasma thiamine deficiency and increased risk of developing microvascular complications. The project outcome will likely support therapeutic decisions in diabetes and identify new strategies to maintain thiamine sufficiency in diabetes.

You should hold, or expect to receive, a first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent in biochemistry, cell biology, cellular and molecular biology, pharmacology, biomedical science, medical sciences or related subject.
