Function title: Genetic Epidemiologist (Post-Doc or PhD)
The genetic epidemiologist will perform association analyses aimed at identifying genes predisposing to sudden cardiac death during myocardial infarction. For this purpose, extensive clinical data is available on the large myocardial infarct patient population with or without ventricular fibrillation forming part of the AGNES study. In addition to clinical information, data on numerous genetic markers in candidate genes is currently available. Data on genetic markers covering the entire genome will become available at the very beginning of the employment. Next to the main task of performing the analyses and publication of the results, you will assist in coordination of the entire project, including the molecular genetic work related to the genome-wide association analyses.
Within the Leducq network, geneticists, (genetic) epidemiologists, statisticians and clinicians from several universities cooperate closely, offering the possibility to spend several weeks or months abroad at these universities to perform research related to your project.

At present an ambitious project is underway at the Academic Medical Center (AMC), Amsterdam, aimed at the identification of genetic factors predisposing to sudden cardiac death during myocardial infarction. This study is called the AGNES (Arrhythmia Genetics in the Netherlands) study and is funded by the Netherlands Heart Foundation. It also forms part of the Fondation Leducq financed project "Alliance against Sudden Cardiac Death" (www.allianceagainstscd.org), in which, besides the AMC, other European as well as American universities participate.
The clinical part of this project is led by Dr. Lukas R.C. Dekker (cardiologist) and Prof. Arthur A.M. Wilde (Professor of Cardiology) from the Department of Cardiology, while the genetic and genetic epidemiology parts of the project are led respectively by Dr. Connie R. Bezzina from the Department of Experimental Cardiology and Dr. Ir. Michael W. Tanck from the Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics.
Conditions of employment
Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 3000 - 3500
Salary: scale 10.Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 4 years
Maximum hours per week: 38
Additional conditions of employment:
We are offering a contract for the duration of the project, four years. The position is for 38 hours a week. The salary for a Post-doc is minimum €2330 and maximum €3678 depending on qualifications and experience (scale 10, collective agreement for Dutch universities, based on full time, 38 hours a week). The salary for a PhD is €2000 (scale P.0, collective agreement for Dutch universities, based on full time, 38 hours a week).

- PhD or MSc in (genetic) epidemiology or medical information, statistics or mathematics with interest in patient-related research and genetic epidemiology
- Experience in association analyses
- Experience with statistical software (R/S plus, SAS, SPSS)
- Preferably experience with molecular genetic / biological techniques
- Good communication and writing skills in English, and preferably (although not an absolute necessity) Dutch.
