University of Amsterdam The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences
(Noord-Holland), 38 hours per week
Job description
"Cooperation vs. Conflict Mental-set and Creativity: Cognitive Load versus Motivated-Focus"
When in conflict people adopt a conflict-mental-set - they expect hostility and seek relative gain - or a cooperation-mental-set - they expect collaboration and seek fairness and joint gain. The widely accepted threat-rigidity hypothesis is that people in a conflict-set become less creative than people in a cooperation-set. Because of inconsistent research evidence, we develop a motivated-focus hypothesis: compared to a cooperation-set, in a conflict-set people focus their cognitive resources to cope with the aversive situation, and therefore become more creative when conflict-related thinking and behavior is considered, but less flexible and creative when conflict-unrelated thinking and behavior is considered. We test specific predictions in 8 experiments. A full description of the project is available upon request. Please contact Carsten de Dreu (c.k.w.dedreu@uva.nl; telephone 020 525 6860) or Bernard Nijstad (b.a.nijstad@uva.nl; telephone 020 525 6863) for further information.
