Job description
The aim of the PhD project is to study glass formation and jamming in colloidal and granular systems. The soft matter group is working on a broad range of topics in soft matter physics, including soft matter mechanics, soft glassy materials, phases and interfaces, and drops and emulsions. The group organizes biannual ‘Soft Matter Meetings' in the Netherlands and annual ‘New York-Amsterdam Meetings on Soft Matter' (see www.softmatter.nl). The successful candidate will join our group and take part in our ongoing national and international collaborations.

The Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute (WZI) is one of the Faculty's ten research institutes. The WZI is currently housed in a recently and attractively renovated building in the Roeterseiland complex in Amsterdam; in time, it will move to a new building in the SciencePark Amsterdam, Watergraafsmeer. The Institute's scientific research is carried out as part of a global network of academic and industrial partners, and is financed by national and international organizations (FOM, STW, NWO, EU, ESF) as well as by industry (Philips, Shell, Unilever). The Institute operates within a fully international framework: its 18 academic staff (14 FTE) span 7 nationalities, and the current 35 PhD students and postdocs have come to the WZI from over 20 countries around the world.
Conditions of employment
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: see below
Maximum hours per week: 38
Additional conditions of employment:
The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a maximum period of four years (an initial period of eighteen months, followed by a further two and a half years subject to a positive evaluation) and should lead to a dissertation.
An educational plan will be drafted, and will include plans for attending courses and national and international meeting. Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week), the gross monthly salary will range from €2000 in the first year to a maximum of €2558 in the fourth year, according to the Dutch salary scale for PhD students.

Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
- Master's in Physics or Physical Chemistry
- Interest in computer programming (experience in IDL and / or Matlab will be helpful)
- Good communication skills in English.
