PhD Religious Studies Riffian Women’s Narrative Claims to Full Citizenship (1,0 fte)

Function title: PhD position
for the project 'Riffian Women’s Narrative Claims to Full Citizenship'. The aim of the project is to analyse self-narratives on role models in order to examine the dynamics between local, transnational and global factors which contribute to situated forms of personal agency that young adult Riffian-Berber women in the Netherlands and Morocco wish for themselves. The project is funded by NWO, the Dutch Council for Scientific Research. The successful applicant will become a member of staff at the University of Groningen and will conduct his/her research within the framework of a joint research programme of the Universities of Groningen, Amsterdam and Fes called ‘Women and Islam: New Perspectives’. The subproject Riffian Women’s Narrative Claims to Full Citizenship focuses on how Moroccan women on both sides of the Mediterranean draw from the various cultural traditions they identify with to underpin claims to citizenship in the sense of full membership in a community with all its rights and obligations. The PhD candidate will collect data by conducting 30 life story interviews with women in Morocco, and 30 in the Netherlands. The PhD candidate will also assist in organizing academic and cultural activities.
Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
You have a master’s degree in Anthropology or any other degree that guarantees an extensive knowledge of the social sciences. You have a good command of (1) Dutch, (2) English or French and (3) (Riffian) Berber or Moroccan-Arabic.

The Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, founded in 1614, is one of the oldest faculties of the University of Groningen. The faculty is located in a historic building in the heart of the city of Groningen. Conditions of employment
Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2558
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: Four years
Maximum hours per week: 38
Additional conditions of employment:
The University of Groningen offers a salary of € 2000 gross per month in the first year up to a maximum of € 2558 gross per month in the fourth year. The appointment is temporary for a specified period of four years. After the first year there will be an assessment of the candidate’s results and the progress of the project. Based on this, it will be decided whether the employment will be continued. The position requires 38 hrs/week research and must result in a PhD dissertation.
Starting date: September 1, 2008.
