Leiden University The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences
Leiden, 2300 RA (The Netherlands), 38 hours per week
Job description
In the section Social and Organizational Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Leiden University, there is a vacancy for a Ph.D. candidate for the project “Morality, competence, and motivation in group contexts”. Recent research has revealed that morality judgements play a central role in social identification processes. Morality is a more important source of in-group value than competence, and group members are more inclined to adjust their own behavior to moral judgments of other in-group members about the self than to competence judgments. However, as yet we know very little about the reasons why morality is more important than competence in group contexts, nor do we know how this affects the motivation and goal oriented behavior of individual group members. The proposed research examines how intra-group morality vs. competence ratings of self and others elicit different strategies for coping and goal achievement among group members.
The project will be supervised by Prof. Dr. N. Ellemers. The Ph.D. candidate will also be affiliated with the Kurt Lewin Institute (KLI), the national post-graduate research school for social psychology. The KLI provides a program for post-graduate training, including workshops, research meetings, and conferences.
