Job description
In a concerted action, the PhD student, a post-doc and a technician will study how Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is able to break the Tsw resistance gene in pepper, to clone and analyse the Tsw gene and using this knowledge to identify useful and durable alleles of this gene. Whilst the post-doc will concentrate on map-based cloning of the Tsw gene and allelic searches, the Ph D student will determine the TSWV avirulence gene, develop diagnostic markers for distinguishing TSWV pathotypes, and analyse obtained Tsw alleles for their performance towards TSWV and related tospoviruses. In close collaboration with a seed company the project, financially supported by the foundation STW (Stichting Technische Wetenschappen), aims to deliver durable resistance traits to combat tospoviruses emerging in pepper crops worldwide.

Required education/skills:University Graduate
For the PhD Virology we are looking for a candidate with an MSc degree in a relevant field (Molecular Sciences, Plant Sciences, Virology) who feels challenged by the aims of this project and has a strong drive for experimental research.

The work will be carried out at the Laboratory of Virology at the Wageningen University. The Laboratory has already conducted previous studies on mapping, cloning and characterizing disease resistance genes from plants. Excellent facilities exist for studying virus-plant interactions and molecular cloning approaches.

Conditions of employment
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 18 months initially with a possibility of extension to 4 years.
Maximum hours per week: 38
Additional conditions of employment:
Full time position for a period of 18 months initially with a possibility of extension to 4 years. Gross salary will be € 2.000,- per month in the first year rising to € 2.558,- per month in the fourth year, according to the collective labor agreement of the VNSU.
