University of Twente Engineering Technology
Enschede, 7500 AE (Overijssel), 38 hours per week
Job description
Project
This project focuses on one of the most urgent waste problems related to mobility: the problem of worn-out passenger car tires. Currently, more than 6 million of waste passenger car tires are collected within the Netherlands. Stacking these tires would result in pile as high as 1200 km. Next of being an environmental problem, this is an immense resource of raw material. However, rubber is such a durable material that it is not easily re-processed as e.g. plastics are.
Collection of used tires is done by an association called BeM, the abbreviation for ‘Band en Milieu’, translated: ‘Tires and Environment’. One of the goals of the association is to find or develop new valuable applications for recycled tire material. Therefore, BeM invested in this project: they are fully financing the work......
This project is executed in co-operation with the University of Groningen (RUG), Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The devulcanization process parameters as elaborated in a small-scale batch process at UT will be transposed into a continuously operating process and scaled up at RUG. The PhD researcher sought right now will start with the investigation of the influence of material composition on the devulcanization process and will develop the small scale process at the UT.
