University of Amsterdam Academic Centre for Dentistry in Amsterdam (ACTA)
Amsterdam, 1066 EA (Noord-Holland), 38 hours per week
Job description
With regard to a research project funded by the "Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam" in the area of bone regeneration with adipose stem cells, growth factors, and calcium phosphate carrier for human sinus floor elevation in oral surgery, there is a vacancy for a PhD student at the "Vrije Universiteit".
PhD student Bone Regeneration and Stem Cells in Oral Surgery (1.0 FTE).
One of the limiting factors for placement of dental implants in the lateral maxilla is insufficient alveolar bone height. For more than 25 years these cases are treated with internal maxillary sinus floor augmentation to allow implant surgery (sinus floor elevation). Autologous bone is the golden standard, but harvesting bone has the disadvantage of a second surgical site. Therefore bone substitutes are needed that provide comparable results. The current bone substitutes have the disadvantage of slow bone ingrowth. If grafting with bone substitutes (Calcium Phosphates) is indicated, then sinus floor elevation is favorable, since the bone substitute is surrounded by vital bone. Earlier attempts with addition of growth factors in the sinus floor model were only partially successful and unpredictable, since only low numbers of stem cells were present at the surgical site. The hypothesis is that growth factor-treated stem cells seeded on calcium phosphate carrier will greatlly improve sinus floor elevation in oral surgery. This study is the first to use adipose stem cells for bone regeneration, and will lead to new insights in oral bone regeneration using bone substitutes.
Work environment
The PhD student will perform the work mainly at the Academic Center of Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), Vrije Universiteit, in the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Cell Biology.
