University of Amsterdam The Academic Centre for Dentistry in Amsterdam (ACTA)
Amsterdam, 1066 EA (Noord-Holland), 38 hours per week
Job description
Salivary gland tumors are a very heterogeneous group of tumors comprising more than 40 subtypes, mostly variant adenocarcinomas. Therefore, accurate diagnosis, therapy and prognosis of these tumors is complicated. Adenocarcinomas of the breast and the gastrointestinal tract are characterized by altered expression and glycosylation of mucins with concomitant cellular and humoral immune responses. This has led to immunotherapeutical clinical trials aiming at stimulating the immune reactivity against these types of tumors. This project aims to gain insight in mucin expression and glycosylation patterns of salivary gland carcinomas. In addition, we will investigate whether changes in composition and glycosylation of mucins in salivary gland tumors are reflected in the secreted saliva, with possible application as non-invasive screening for diagnostics of salivary gland tumors. Additional candidate tumor markers may emerge, which will be further validated by studying their presence in embedded archival tissues.
