Switzerland: PhD Position in Aerosol and Health Research

The Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry at the Paul Scherrer Institut has a strong research program in aerosol chemistry and physics. Within an interdisciplinary collaboration with the Institute of Anatomy at the University of Bern (Prof. M. Geiser Kamber) we investigate the primary biological causes of the epidemiologically proven effect of airborne particles on morbidity and mortality.

The emphasis of the open position is to develop an aerosol exposure system for on-line study of impacts of aerosols on cell culture systems. You will have to monitor and characterize the aerosol physically and chemically to investigate the most relevant particle properties and species which are crucial for adverse responses of the biological system. The work involves the application of state-of-the-art instrumentation (ion-chromatography, mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopy). You have to work in close collaboration with another PhD student and faculty from the Institute of Anatomy at the University of Bern operating the cell culture systems.

You have a Master degree in analytical chemistry or a closely related discipline and are familiar with atmospheric sciences. The position requires a high ability to interact with the faculty and other Ph.D. students. You, as our successful candidate, should be proficient in spoken and written English and have basic knowledge in German.

We offer an up-to date research infrastructure, collaboration in an international and interdisciplinary team and the possibility to receive the Ph.D. from ETH Zurich.
