UK: University of Warwick PhD Studentship Warwick HRI

Project Title:
Diversity and activity of microbial populations cycling methylated sulfur compounds in terrestrial environments

This fully funded studentship project will characterise microbial populations that degrade methylated sulfur compounds in terrestrial environments (natural and managed) using microbiological and molecular ecological methods. The aim is to identify key microbial populations that are relevant in the cycling of these compounds. The emphasis of this project will be on dimethylsulfide (DMS) but a range of related methylated sulfur compounds will also be be considered where appropriate, e.g. methanesulfonic acid (MSA), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and dimethylsulfone (DMSO2).

The project will provide the student with an excellent basis in environmental microbiological research. For more information about the Schäfer Research Group see http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/whri/research/dms/).

This studentship is for 3 years with a start date of October 2008 and will be registered at the University of Warwick.
