Germany: PhD Position FU Berlin

PhD Graduating Position in context with the
HGF Alliance “Planetary Evolution and Life”

The position will be funded by the Helmholtz-Society through the Research Alliance “Planetary Evolution and Life”. The Alliance is led and managed by Institut für Planetenforschung, Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, Berlin.
Working hours 19,25 h/week
Duration of employment: Current funding is available for up to three years.
Salary according to BAT IIa (i.d.F.d. Anw.-TV FUB)

Job Description: We invite applications for a PhD graduating position in the Department of Earth Sciences, Institute of Geosciences, Planetary Sciences and Remote Sensing, FU Berlin, Germany. The position is dedicated to the investigation of the Geological Context of Life in the Solar System. The appointment addresses geological evaluation of remote sensing data of planetary surfaces with emphasis on Mars with the following main objectives
geomorphologic analysis of surface structures
Correlation of surface features and processes
Dating of surface units by stratigraphic and cratering methods

Required Qualification:

Candidates must have an University degree (diploma or Master’s degree) in either earth and
planetary sciences, physics, or related disciplines and experience in numerical methods
and modern programming languages

Very good English and German knowledge as working languages in the research department

Desired Qualification:
Knowledge in geosciences, planetology, or physics
Experience in the photogeologic/geomorphologic interpretation of remote sensing data
Interest of investigation of surface features and processes in the solar system
Programming skills in several languages such as FORTRAN, C/C++, IDL, GIS or scripting
languages in a Unix/Linux environment are desirable
A strong interest to gain training in planetary sciences and willingness to participate in an
interdisciplinary research environment is beneficial
