Nertherlands: PhD in project 'Space in Ancient Greek Literature' University of Amsterdam

Job description
The project Space in Ancient Greek Literature, forms part of a larger project, a multi-volume literary history of ancient Greek narrative. The Studies in Ancient Greek Narrative (SAGN), published by Brill, Leiden, aims at offering for the first time in the history of classical scholarship a full description of the art of narration in Ancient Greek literature, ranging from epic, via historiography, drama, oratory, and philosophy, to the novel. This history of the techniques of storytelling in antiquity lays bare the roots of the modern European novel. After one volume on the narrator (2004), one on time (2007), the third volume will deal with the representation of space (in a broad sense, including objects which act as ‘props' in that space).

Possible PhD topics:

Topic 1. Space in archaic lyric; PhD project, three year appointment, University of Amsterdam, supervisor prof. Irene J.F. de Jong.

Topic 2. Heroic space in Attic drama; PhD project, three year appointment, University of Amsterdam, supervisor prof. Irene J.F. de Jong.

The candidate is expected to research and complete a Ph.D. dissertation within a period of three years (four years in the case of a part-time position).

Additional conditions of employment:
The intention is for the appointment to start on 1 September 2008, in temporary employment for a period of one year. After completing this first year successfully, the candidate will be employed for a further two years. The gross monthly salary will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel, and will range from € 2330 to a maximum of € 2558.
