This project will take lab-on-a-chip chemical sensor technology from a laboratory setting, develop it and apply it in the harsh marine environment. The research will develop more resilient and rugged devices, it will miniaturise and integrate functionality to produce autonomous and standalone miniature sensing systems, and it will develop analytical protocols to enable measurement of a number of chemical species with micro devices.
The studentship is fully funded, covering University tuition fees (at EU/UK level) and provides a tax-free bursary of £12,900 per year, rising annually in line with the UK Government (EPSRC) recommended rate, for a three-year duration. Non - EU applicants will need to find the fees difference of £10,410.
The students will join a large team developing new lab-on-a-chip technologies for marine sensing. These systems will form part of a network of sensing platforms for high resolution in-situ chemical and biological analysis of the oceans. The project will provide new insights into the underlying causes of environmental and climate change. A new centre for Marine Microsystems will act as a focus for interdisciplinary activities. Applicants will be expected to work at both the School of Electronics and Computer Science and the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.
Entry requirements: The studentships are available to candidates with the equivalent of a first class or upper second class degree in relevant disciplines, e.g. engineering, chemical engineering, analytical chemistry, physics, or analytical sciences. The studentships are at the standard EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) rate, commencing in October 2008.
