UK: PhD Studentships in Machine Learning, University College London

Application are invited from outstanding PhD students for PhD studentships in a research project focusing on developing formal methods for multi-task and transfer learning, an increasingly important research area in machine learning with high potential in several application domains. The PhD student is expected to contribute to both the methodological and the software components of the project.

Candidates should have:

  • A relevant first degree (Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics etc.) awarded with first or upper second-class Honours, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard;
  • Strong programming skills, preferably in Matlab, C, or C++, etc.
  • A solid background in Maths is encouraged (e.g. linear algebra, convex optimization, functional analysis, probability theory, etc.) as well as previous knowledge of machine learning.

PhD students will join research group in Machine Learning at UCL, starting in October 2008. The student will be supervised by Dr. Massimiliano Pontil (m.pontil @ cs.ucl.ac.uk). This studentship is open to both UK/EU and overseas applicants. However, only UK/EU applicants are entitled to receive the full award (stipend of approximately £14,900 p.a. in addition to tuition fees) - overseas applicants receive tuition fees only and would need to find the money to support themselves and pay their living costs from elsewhere.
